Stumbling stones in Milan: the Stolpersteine map
What are stumbling blocks and where are they located in Milan? Today, in this special on CityDoorMilano.it, we take you to the discovery of the "Stolpersteine" present in our city, an important project to keep alive the memory of all the people deported and killed in concentration and extermination camps during the Holocaust.
WHAT ARE STUMBLING STONES?
The stumbling blocks ("Stolpersteine" in German) are small square blocks of stone measuring 10x10 centimeters, placed in front of the door of the house where the person deported to the concentration and extermination camps by the Nazis last resided. The name, year of birth, day and place of deportation, date of death of the victim are written on the stone.
The initiative was born thanks to the German artist Gunter Demnig, born in Berlin in 1947, and the first stone was laid in Cologne in 1995. Since then, more than 70,000 have been placed throughout Europe, for a total of over 2,000 cities involved between Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and Hungary.
The first Italian stumbling blocks were laid in Rome in 2010, followed over time by Bolzano, Genoa, L'Aquila, Livorno, Milan, Reggio Emilia, Siena, Turin, Venice and other smaller towns. In Milan the first six stumbling blocks were laid in January 2017, followed by another twenty-six at the beginning of 2018 ... today the Ambrosian city has about ninety.
Before moving on to the map dedicated to the stumbling blocks present on Milanese soil, we report the phrase from the Talmud that inspired Gunter Demnig more than any other: "A person is forgotten only when his name is forgotten".
